The COVID-19 pandemic introduced drastic changes and harrowing circumstances for businesses worldwide. As entrepreneurs struggled to push past the health crisis’s unprecedented effects, they have had to develop innovative solutions to stay afloat. One of the businesses that has not only survived but also thrived in the pandemic is Stilton Butchers, the Peterborough area’s prime choice, which provides its services to homes across the United Kingdom.

Established in 1978, in a quaint village called Stilton near Peterborough, Stilton Butchers is the primary source of high-standard meat in the locale. Its friendly service and reputation for quality and excellence birthed three consecutive branches within only a year from opening.

Peter Morgan, the brilliant mind behind the venture, saw a growing demand in the catering sector and quickly made the transition. He sold his shops and moved into a large, custom-built unit that concentrated solely on his specified market. From then on, it was a success story in the making. Its rising impact on the community led to the opening of its third powerful unit, a 16,000 square foot custom-built cutting plant.

The entrepreneur’s brand steadily became the go-to choice for premium-grade meat. Before the coronavirus made rounds, it supplied to cafes, pubs, and eating establishments all over the United Kingdom, including leading and popular Michelin-star restaurants. Once the pandemic was announced, Stilton Butchers started supplying to homes as well.

When the COVID-19 crisis forced the United Kingdom into a lockdown, the family-run company was pushed into a crisis itself. It had zero customers and a whopping 1 million pounds’ worth of fresh meat. Fortunately, James Morgan, a former national athlete and Peter’s son, knew what he had to do.

Going with the trend, Stilton Butchers officially opened its online shop. As it adapted to the times, it became a nationwide delivery service. “We turned all our focus to our retail customer base by re-developing our website, hiring more staff, and investing in delivering nationwide,” the new owner shares.

“Almost instantly, we saw sales skyrocket and, in six months, watched our retail turnover more than double the previous catering income. We’ve taken the website from obtaining an average of 500 orders a month to an average of over 5,000 monthly orders.”

It was an instant hit. Thermal-insulated packages designed for chilled and frozen food kept the meat at 5°C for up to 72 hours, although it is delivered much faster than that. To cater to its expanding clientele, the butcher shop has opened its services to taking orders online and by telephone.

Already in a league of its own, Stilton Butchers is becoming the convenient supermarket alternative for top quality, five-star meat. Growing from the “local butcher” of the Peterborough area to its current high standing in the industry, Peter Morgan and James Morgan’s venture is determined to use obstacles as a trampoline for success.
