Sigourney Sterling is a Haitian, LA-based independent artist who goes by the stage name Sig Official. Sig, born in Port au Prince, but grew up on the East coast. She owes her music foundation and growth to Afrobeat culture, Haitian Kompa, and Zouk. She began her career as a producer for local artists while attending the Arts Institute until she found her true calling on the mic. She subsequently relocated to the West Coast and began recording African-like sounds.

Sig Official’s music is firmly rooted in Afrobeats and Kompa mix, and she has successfully combined different genres of music while taking certain elements from diverse sounds in hip-hop culture. Her recent self-produced single, “Kreyol,” has achieved tremendous reaction among the local community and her community back home in Haiti.

Sig Official started producing for local artists while attending college at the Arts Institute. She soon found her calling on the mic. Her music has been described to create euphoric melodies that everyone regardless of culture can find pleasure in. And thanks to an amazing team working alongside her and in the background, Sig Official’s music is now available to people from all over who have access to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and more streaming platforms are expected to be added soon.

Sig, having spent the last few years building a firm foundation for herself, while pursuing her personal goal and aspiration of teaching a global audience, her latest EP ‘Kreyol Szning’ is set to be released on March 5, 2021. And this time around, she has higher expectations of this new project more than any of her previous projects. And considering how well her single (Kreyol) off the EP has performed, she believes her time is now.

On what motivated her to go into music, she said, “Moving from the east coast to the west coast, I felt like I left some people behind. I decided to connect with them through my music, merchandise, and social media platforms. The positive outcomes in my current music reaffirms that there is a market for the style of music I present today. I have made it virtually possible for people to have a piece of my gear as though it was a piece of me. Staying active on my social media platforms gives me a chance to reach a wider audience while promoting my music. I am hoping my brand will resonate in people’s homes as well as their hearts.”

She also intends to attract multiple viewers who are overlooked or are unable to be themselves; particularly the LBGTQ+ community. And coming from a third-world country where a number of cultures are alien, coupled with the problems the people are facing, Sig wants to show the rest of the world the reality of Haitians.

Though Sig wants to reach a global audience with her music, however, she wants Haiti, her home country to be the focal point. She hopes to introduce the rest of the world to the sounds and vibrations peculiar to the area. She also hopes to motivate up-and-coming artists from the area to embrace the culture and take it far and wide.

In five years, Sig sees her brand and music conquering new terrains, locally and globally. “I want my listeners to be able to feel heard while having fun. They will be able to represent a musical figure they can relate to. I want to be able to bring a diversified music taste into our social circle. I hope to be a reference to the new sound in which I’ve innovated while inspiring others to try new things and face their fears.”
